Critical minerals, wider questions
Supply resilience needs context, definitions and dated evidence.
RESEARCH BRIEF · 9 NOVEMBER 2026
The evidence
The IEA’s July 2026 outlook examines market trends, future supply and demand, and supply-chain resilience across critical minerals. Its scope includes energy uses and strategic industries beyond energy.
What it means for a brief
For a materials brief, identify the mineral, the supply-chain stage and the end use before interpreting a market statement. Mining, refining and component manufacture can have different concentration risks.
A practical next step
Treat modelled outcomes as scenarios. Record the publication date, policy assumptions and geography. A global outlook is not a supplier quotation or a prediction for a particular purchasing contract.
